Whether you are creating Facebook ads, posting stories, or posts for your news feed; you want them to pop and look as awesome as you intended them to be. To achieve this, you need to know the correct dimensions to use.
Those ideal dimensions can change often, making it a bit frustrating to stay on top of them. For example, you take the time to create a nice banner for your Facebook page, and then a few months later it looks off because the new dimensions crop the image.
When you search for the right dimensions, it may be hard to know if you are looking at the newest requirements. It can also be exhausting to search through endless Facebook help pages.
To alleviate those problems, we’ve updated our comprehensive “Facebook Image Sizes and Ad Dimensions Cheat Sheet” for 2022. You don’t have to go searching for the answers every time you need the latest dimension requirements. Photos, GIFs, Video, and Story dimensions are all right here.

Why do Facebook image size and Ad dimension matter?
The importance of images has been discussed. However, what about the image sizes and dimensions?
Images on Facebook are different sizes, depending on your profile picture, cover photo, or ad. An image that is too small will get resized to the point of being pixelated and distorted, which will reflect negatively on your brand. As one of the first things a visitor or potential prospect sees, a cover photo of the right size is critical to any business. The size and dimensions of images are important for a few reasons:
- Using the correct size for your Facebook profile can avoid blurry, distorted, and stretched images.
- Your Ads will look better and stand out if you use the proper image size!
- Accurate image sizes improve Ad placement and targeting across multiple platforms.
- Can increase engagement for the events created on Facebook.
Facebook’s 20% Rule
Is your Facebook Ad getting disapproved or performing poorly? It could very well be a result of Facebook’s scoring system for Ads.
Previously, posts were disapproved due to Facebook’s 20% text rule, but now this has changed. Facebook has removed the rule, giving advertisers more flexibility with text, but this does not guarantee that your text-heavy ads will perform.
Facebook encourages advertisers to continue best practices and our handy tool can help ensure that your ads meet Facebook’s text policy guidelines!
New Facebook Ad Policy:
The new ad policy allows advertisers to promote their posts even if the text limit crosses the 20% rule.
However, this doesn’t mean that text-heavy images will perform well. Facebook still encourages advertisers to abide by the 20% text rule.
Facebook says that images with 20% or less text will generally perform better.
Facebook used to have a text overlay tool in which you could upload the image to check if the ad met the specified guidelines and if it was qualified enough to run. This tool has been removed after the recent change.
But don’t worry! Our Facebook text overlay tool is still available here to help your social media marketing team maintain ad quality.

I’m trying to put images on the ‘services’ part of the page. They seem to be square – at least this is how they look on mobile and desktop, but on tablet (iPad) they display as a rectangle and look terrible. Are the squares centred versions of a rectangle? It seems strange that desktop and mobile show the same thing, but tablet something entirely different …

I’m confused. So the shared image has a max width of 504 pixels, but the recommended upload width is 1200 pixels? Why for?
on
Hi Ryan, the shared image is displayed on Facebook with a max width of 504 px. 1200 pixels is the recommended upload size. Hope that clears your doubt 🙂
on
Thanks a lot for this sheet – helped me a great deal today 🙂

You’re more than welcome Birgit. It’s why we designed this sheet 🙂

It is observed that more than 95% of Facebook Pages cover photos are made only for desktops. Very few Pages take into account how it will look in mobiles.

This is awesome! Time saving & very helpful for our guidance.
on
Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for a great reasource! any tips for iphones so the image isnt cropped?
on
@Alex Davies:
Yes I too agree this is very helpful.
FB cover photos are 851 pixels wide and 315 pixels height. If you upload an image that’s smaller than these dimensions, it will get pixelated. To get the fastest load times for your Page, upload an sRGB JPG file that’s less than 100 kilobytes and for images with your logo or text-based content, you may get a higher quality result by using a PNG file.
on
Thanks for this! Super helpful! I use photoshop and I use the correct size for my cover photos with a dpi of 72, but my pictures are a little pixelated sometimes. Do you know how to fix this?
on
Really helpful, bookmarked it. Make more! I love the little guy, whoever made this is very talented
on
This just goes to show that Facebook hates us! How many different versions of graphics do we now have to make.
on
Re mobile dimensions: one thing I noticed is that the iPhone Facebook app crops the cover photo, showing only the middle part. This is probably worth reflecting in the cheat sheet.
on
Do you have mobile dimensions?
on
@Matt A, Mobile dimensions will vary depending on the type of operating system you’re using. Nonetheless, image sizes scale from desktop to mobile and vice versa, so I don’t believe you need to worry about mobile Facebook dimensions just yet. As long as images are optimized for the page they should convert properly on mobile devices.
on
Fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing this!
on
Thanks for sharing the infographic Andre.
on
Thank you very much, awesome infographic! Embed it on our blog: http://fashionandre.pl/facebook-cheat-sheet/ 🙂

Thanks Christy for sharing and also thank you Rajesh. This is very useful for me because, like Diamond, I’m horrible at sizing my pictures and this cheatsheet will definitely help me and others like me.
on
Curious what the difference is between the two versions of “Facebook Shared Video”. Is that an “actual” facebook video for the first one, and a youtube link for the second one? Would love to know how to be sure to get the larger preview….
on
@DB
The first “Facebook Shared Video is the size when you upload an “actual” Facebook video. The second one is the size of the video when someone clicks the share button found directly under an “actual” Facebook video. None of the video sizes references any external sites such as YouTube. All the sizes reference strictly Facebook dimensions. I hope that answers your question DB!
on
This is helpful for me for the simple fact that I am terrible at doing this on my lonesome. I’m happy you used a list of steps, because no doubt I will be going back and forth from this page for reference.
on
Thanks for sharing. A very useful one for the ones who wanted the Facebook image to be pixel perfect.
on
We’re glad you’ve find it useful Beniston!
on
I am so happy that you have created this! I have such a hard time managing my pages because I can’t afford to pay a graphic designer and I am never able to correctly size my images. I am going to repost this on Facebook to my professional network.
on
Fantastic piece of information, thank you Rajesh 🙂
I will be sharing this with many people, thanks for the embed code 🙂

34-24-36. Put those measurements on your page and all young guys will click on it! I know I would. All jokes aside this is certainly the most detailed image sizer for Facebook I’ve ever seen.

@Ramkrishnan @88redforest, I am very happy to know that this was very useful for you guys.
on
This is a very useful reference sheet and I’m sure many other people will enjoy this and use it to their fullest advantage. Thanks for sharing it!
on
This is super helpful for design team, planning with client and brain storming. Good work here techwyse. Why are you redirecting your link that is in your facebook post over to the Blog URL… tracking purposes etc ? Just curious. Thanks again.
on
@Jeff,
Facebook image sizes don’t accommodate our infographic’s dimensions; therefore, we link it to Facebook from the blog. We do the same with all of our blog content!
on
Wow! This is a very informative article. I was looking for something like this before, Haha, and finally I found it. It was quite hard to adjust your pictures in facebook without knowing the right dimensions. Thanks for this wonderful tip!

Great tool… defnitely helpful..Thanks christy
