ICSC: 85% of Gen Z says social media impacts purchase decisions

Long gone are the days when social media was just used to poke your friends or send your grandma holiday pictures. In recent years, social media has quickly become a powerful tool in the marketing world. Not only does it help businesses create brand awareness, but also promotes their products and services and nurtures a loyal customer base.
Speaking of customers, an important group that helped social media gain momentum is the generation that has lived their whole lives with the internet–GenZ. In their blog, the Retail Dive reveals data that was found from a report conducted by the International Council of Shopping Centers on GenZ’s spending habits.
According to ICSC, eighty-five percent of respondents in the generation said social media influences their purchasing choices. Eighty-five percent of men and 86% of women said social media affects their buying decisions. Forty-five percent of Gen Z respondents named TikTok and Instagram as the top platforms influencing their purchasing decisions, followed by YouTube (38%), Facebook (24%), Snapchat (17%), Twitter (14%) and Reddit (7%).
Since Gen Z is relying more heavily on TikTok and Instagram over other platforms, you should consider prioritizing those social media spaces in your marketing strategy if you haven’t already.
